God Loves You… So why don’t you Love Yourself?
That’s a loaded question, Right? This question is posed in a way that suggests, God’s love for you, and your love for yourself are interdependent. As Christians, we know that the first part of the question is a definite fact. God loves you. There are multiple scriptures that back up that fact throughout the Bible. For example, one of the most quoted scriptures worldwide states the following: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16, NIV). Based on the first part of the scripture, we see that God loves the world, the entire world, even the people who don’t believe in him. That literally means that God’s love for us is not dependent on our love for ourselves. As a result, there is nothing we can do to separate ourselves from the love of God. The issue though is that the realities of life often get in the way of us being able to truly love ourselves. When we experience heartache or disappointment, we often feel disregarded, worthless, and unloved. All of those feelings are lies and distortions of the truth. We may have gone through, or are perhaps currently dealing with some tough things, but God’s love is unwavering. It never fails, and it never gives up on us.
Looking back at John 3:16, we see in the second part of the scripture an extra bonus for those of us who choose to believe: eternal life. All we need to do is accept the fact that He loves us. Then we can start to believe the truth of what God’s word says about us. Once we are able to accept those truths, loving ourselves regardless of our situations will be automatic. Although God’s love for us is not dependent on how we feel about ourselves, accepting and believing in that love, aids in our ability to love ourselves. Loving ourselves untimely aids in our ability to properly love and accept love from others. So, choose to accept God’s love, so that you can begin to love yourself. After all, the Creator himself thought you were to die for.
